Miami is in the most heavily populated county in the state and is the county seat. It is the largest city in the whole metropolitan area. The Miami metro area is the 7th largest in the nation. It has been named a global city because of its stature in the industries of finance, entertainment, media, arts and commerce. The city was also ranked Americas Cleanest City in 2008 by Forbes magazine. Apartment-ites can't help but prosper in an upwardly
mobile environment such as this.
Miami is known for more than its perfect facade, however. The history of the state is as rich and interesting as its present. Tequesta Indians first settled in the area. They lived there for over a thousand years but the area was claimed by Spain in the mid 1500's. Unrest between Indians and settlers continued in the area and in the 1800's the city was a sight of battle during the Second Seminole War.
Miami is the only major city in the nation to be founded by a female. A Cleveland native named Julia Tuttle moved to Miami to continue her father's citrus plantation after he died. She sold her late husbands iron works company and moved to Miami. She expanded the citrus grove through out the years earning herself the moniker "Mother of Miami."
